How to View Quicktime .MOV as Thumbnails in a Windows XP Folder
On two other previous posts, I have explained how to display the contents of an Adobe Photoshop PSD Thumbnail in a windows XP explorer folder instead of the standard icon, and also the same for an Adobe Illustrator file.
The links to these are below:
Now you can do the same thing with any folder that contains a .MOV movie file……….
- Download and open the file, MOV_thumbnails.zip(171kb)
- Copy QuickThumb.dll and msvcr70.dll to c:\windows\system32\
- Go to START / Run and enter regsvr32 QuickThumb.dll (see image above) then click OK
- You now can view .MOV files in Thumbnails view within Windows Explorer.
- When in the folder where the .MOV files are, Make sure that you select thumbnails from the views drop-down, or you may still see the icon as before.

This doesn’t work for me on Vista : (
Any ideas?
Sorry , haven’ got a clue about Vista, as I am not a user.
The Title of the post was:
” How to View Quicktime .MOV as Thumbnails in a Windows XP Folder ”
If i find out , i’ll let you know !
when loaded the Dll it enounters A.S.A,P. I may be doing something wrong, but I am sure if you o not know what you’re doing be warned you’ll find outhte hard way thanks anyway for the failed files
Downloaded files, smooth install…however, Windows Explorer now crashes when .mov files are viewed as thumbnails.
Any solution?
Thanks…
after doing this, my windows explorer also always crashed when .mov files are viewed as thumbnails.
Had to uninstall it. To do this, simply go back to start –> Run..and enter this:
regsvr32 /u QuickThumb.dll
Thanks Nathan for that info, i’m sure some may have to use
regsvr32 /u QuickThumb.dll
The problem with .MOV thumbnails crashing your windows explorer, is simply because you are trying to view too many files within that folder, and you simply run out of memory
Create some sub folders to put the files in and this will reduce the amount of files your memory will try to access or increase your memory. but no matter how much memory you have installed, eventually this problem will occur when there are a lot of MOV files, or the files are big, so keep the contents minimal and you’ll be fine.
I had Explorer crashing problems as well in XP. I believe the issue for me was one of the newer versions of iTunes was causing a conflict. Whenever I had a folder with the .mov thumbnails open, and I then opened iTunes, Windows Explorer would crash. Unregistering the .dll “solved” the problem, but of course I lost the functionality. Fortunately it’s easy to unregister and re-register as needed.
But now I’m using Windows 7, and still no thumbnails for QuickTime .mov’s… Ugh.
Hi Jay
sorry can’t help you with 7, going to stick with XP for now
Thank you so much for the help. I couldn’t figure out why in the world I couldn’t view .mov files in windows XP with quicktime alternative. You fixed my problem. Thanks again.
First of all, thank you so much for your helpful info. I had great luck installing the fix to view the .psd thumbnails and I’m so excited to use this feature… I always save a .jpg with the same file name as my .psd just so I can see the thumbnail which is always a pain.
I’m having the same problem with the .mov fix as some of the other posters above but the fix to only view a few at a time didn’t work for me either. It crashed everytime I try to view thumbnails. Do you have any other ideas?
Thank you,
Hi Kelly
Glad the .psd fix worked for you, but i dont’ know of any way way to stop windows crashing, apart from increasing your physical memory (more memory chips) i had the problem when i had 2gb, now with 4gb it works fine -
