On A very cold, but sunny day in February 2009, Saturday the 7th, something unusual happened that is not an everyday occurrence. Although about 30 minutes later than expected, an A1 class Tornado thundered through Arlesey at a speed approaching 75 mile per Hour
No, I am not talking about some kind of freak weather condition. The Tornado in question is a Peppercorn A1 60163 Tornado Locomotive Stream Engine (The Talisman), and was built in Darlington over a period of 18 years with donations from enthusiasts.

Now before we go any further, I must say I am definitely not a train spotter, not that there is anything wrong with train spotting, but i would like to clarify my position here.
I do feel that something this magnificent is not to be over looked , and the turn out to view this event, along the journey 1Z29 from Darlington to Kings Cross Station in London, is testimony to this.
The Tornado, weighing in at about 500 tons, pulled 13 carriages effortlessly. The train is apple green and the first 30 Peppercorn class A1s where painted in this colour. Fare-paying passengers started on the 31st January 2009.
The train set off from Darlington at 7:45 and arrived at London King’s Cross station shortly after 2pm.
