HostGator iNode Warning – Upgrade or your suspended!

This is the Facts as I see them - And how to prevent suspension of your Hostgator account!

HostGator are a fantastic web space provider and will bend over backwards to help you, and provide many built in facilities that many other web space providers only wish they could supply at such a low cost.

But just the other day, I received an email ( see below for full email ) stating that my iNodes where more than 50,000 and if I didn’t reduce them within seven days my account may be suspended, an alternative was to upgrade to a Dedicated Server ( more costly, of course) .

After the initial panic, I thought OK, i’ll reduce my iNodes – That’s if I knew what an iNode was !, which at the time I didn’t.  An iNode stores the information of the file in the Linux file system. To reduce the usage of the iNode, just remove the unwanted files from your web space. So basically, to reduce you iNode, you remove some files from you account using either an FTP Software or the c-panel. Simple enough I thought.

The problem is there is no way that i know of showing how many iNodes (or files) you have on this shared server webspace, using any of the supplied tools in the c-panel

PHP Script To The Rescue

To find out how many iNodes you are using on your shared HostGator account, download any of the 2 files below, and upload to your root folder on the HostGator server.

For Example:  upload your inode1.php File to the public_html folder
then using your browser go to www.yoursite.com/inode1.php
and you will instantly see how many inodes have been used on your account, without opening c-panel or your ftp software.

PHP 1: Simple

iNode 1 - Download file Here

PHP 2: more Detailed

iNode 2 - Download file Here

use your browser and go to www.yoursite.com/inodes1.php or inodes2.php or what ever you called the PHP files, and your iNode count will be revealed!

25,000 iNodes & counting

On the account I have with hostgator, i had over 25,000 txt files in a folder that i was unaware of, and this was the reason why my warning was issued. These files where stored on the websapce in a folder called cache, and this was steadily increasing on a daily basis

There was nothing wrong with this but due to the software requirements, this folder would rapidly fill up, and therefore i decided to delete all files and software related to it, to gain back my lost webspace.

10 Step email check

one of the first things you need to do is check for spam mail, even if your site does not have webmail set up. As this will increase your iNode count dramatically, and will allow you to keep all your legitamate files on the server without deletion.
10 Steps

Go to http://www.yoursite.com/cpanel
1. Click on Mail
2. Click on Web mail
3. Click on Horde
4. Login
5. Click on Mail
If you find a lot of spam emails
6. Click on Folders
7. Tick Inbox
8. Choose Empty Folders from the Drop Down box above
9. Click Empty Selected Folders
10. Do this regularly before you get an email from Hostgator like this:

This was the email sent to me

Server: gator99
     User: xxxxxxx
    Email: xxxxxxxxx (Owner)
   iNodes: 52476 (warning)
Catchalls: 1 (warning)

Date: Sun Jul 27 00:14:20 CDT 2008
Email: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Account Name: xxxxxxx
Server: gator99.hostgator.com
iNodes (Files): 52476/50,000 (104.00%)

Hello,

To maintain the highest level of performance on our shared servers we have a maximum inode (file) limit of 50,000 inodes (files) per account. The size of the file does not matter, only the number of files. For example, a DVD image (say, 4.5gb) only counts as one inode, or file. Our limit, as outlined in our terms of service, is 50,000 files per account. We generally don’t hold people strictly to this limit, but at the same time we expect our users to respect the limits of the system. When an account has hundreds of thousands of files, it significantly degrades overall disk performance, as each file on the disk must be tracked/indexed.

An easy analogy would be a table of contents or glossary for a book. If the book only has a few hundred pages, the index or glossary is likely to be small and easy to search. If the book has 5,000 pages, finding what you want might take significantly longer. The file system on a server works in a similar way, just on a larger scale. Our experience has shown that 50,000 files per account is a fair number, and accounts that exceed that by a significant amount cause disk performance issues.  This message is to inform you that the listed account has significantly exceeded our limits for disk inodes/files and could potentially lead to disk issues.

It is also important to realize that accounts that exceed the inode (file) limit are not backed up by our courtesy weekly backup service, per section 7b of our Terms of Service. Of course, we advise every user to run their own backups to be safe. Accounts over our the 50,000 inode limit are bypassed so that backups can complete in a timely fashion for everyone. Otherwise, accounts with hundreds of thousands or more inodes will utilize more server resources than other accounts, and could lead to file system errors on our backup servers.

This account will be re-checked again in 7 days to verify it is below 50,000 files. If this account remains above the maximum inode limit after repeated checks, we’ll have to review the situation further and advise a course of action. It is critical that one of the following actions take place before that happens:

a) reduce the number of inodes/files. This change must be permanent; if you have a high number of cache files or similar, and you expect them to naturally exceed the inode limit again in the future, the configuration must be changed to limit the total number of cached files.

If you are completely unaware of the source of the inodes, it may be that you have left your default mailbox enabled, and never cleared it. Over time, it can fill up with spam, consuming hundreds of thousands of inodes. If you have a catch-all enabled on your account, this can greatly increase the amount of mail/spam that our account receives and will raise your inode usage quickly unless routinely emptied. If you would like assistance clearing these folders from unwanted email or removing the catch-all from your account, please let us know and we would be happy to assist you.

The default mailbox is located at:

    /home/xxxxxxxx/mail/cur
    /home/xxxxxxxx/mail/new

b) upgrade to dedicated service, where inode counts are no longer checked. In many cases, accounts that significantly exceed our inode/file limits have simply outgrown the shared  environment, and a dedicated server is the logical choice. In many cases, the transfer from a shared to dedicated server will incur no charge. In rare situations, accounts with excessive numbers of accounts or users may require a fee; the transfer department would advise you of that fact prior to the transfer taking place. If you’ve read this far, it’s clear you’re serious about taking care of the issue and we can offer you 50% off off the first month’s purchase of a dedicated server. To receive the discount, please:

   – Reply to this email stating you’d like to upgrade. You will
automatically be assigned a ticket number, which will be
visible in the subject line. You may need to confirm your
email if this is the first time you’ve ever sent us a
ticket or emailed one of our departments.

   – Order a dedicated server:
          http://www.hostgator.com/billing/order/orderwiz.php

   – Email sales@hostgator.com after placing your order. This
promotion is unadvertised, and must be manually approved.
You must reference the ticket # you receive (above) to
qualify for the discounted rate. This promotion only
applies to dedicated servers priced $ 219.00 or higher.

We thank you for taking the time to resolve this issue. If you have any questions or perhaps you are not sure what could be causing the high number of inodes, we can help you with that. Simply reply to this email and we will be more than happy to assist you.

How To Terminate Affiliates & Make Better Profits

July 25, 2008 by Lee Jones · 1 Comment

I suppose the first thing you’re going to ask is

Why would any one want to terminate the account of an affiliate? And become an Affiliate Terminator!

Surely the affiliates you already have and worked hard to get should be cherished as they are busy working to promote your products, are out there from all parts of the world working in the behind the scenes 24 / 7 earning you money from the sale of your product, be it an e-book, software or audio/video multimedia presentation.

The Internet Marketers who promote a product as an affiliate are very well paid for their efforts, and it’s not unusual for the commission paid out to an affiliate to be more per product sold, than you get as the developer. But that does not mean you should not care how your affiliates promote your product, and allow them to advertise your product how they see fit.

A certain type of technique has unfortunately become very wide spread using sponsored Links known as PPC (pay per click) advertising, such as Google Adwords, , and one that is currently being taught by some very thoughtless Internet Marketers.

It really makes me cringe and my blood boil when I read an e-book or watch a tutorial video where the self proclaimed expert, and in many cases even some well know Internet Marketing Guru’s, actively encourage this particular greedy and damaging practice.

Why do I feel so strongly about this unethical practice, and why do I think you should also become an Affiliate Terminator,

There are basically 2 types of people who become Affiliates:

 The Builders
The Destroyers

 1. The Builder

The Builder Affiliate is the type of person you want on your team, they develop relationships with the potential customer, and if their good at what they do, they will liaise directly with you in developing their affiliate sales. They will do as much as possible to promote, and go out of their way to build a positive relationship with your customers……… and yes, always remember they are your customers and not the customer of the affiliate; this is something that you must always remember.

The Affiliate although a crucial part of your sales team, is only promoting the product on your behalf for financial gain, and in most cases has very little input into the development of the product, So keep that in mind. And in return the affiliate will be rewarded for their efforts when a sale is made. They will continue to become a valuable asset to your business, and will happily promote further products you market as and when they are developed. Unless of course, they are a Destroyer!

 2. The Destroyer

The Destroyer Affiliate also has a similar approach to the Builder Affiliate in that their aim is to promote your product on your behalf, to make a sale, and therefore get paid a commission for doing so. But there is a difference, and one that has a dramatic difference in you overall sales, and your online reputation.

The thing is, this type of Affiliate couldn’t give a monkeys about your customers, cares very little about your reputation as a marketer, and is only interested in how much money their going to make on the back end of all your hard work. Is this the type of Affiliate you want promoting for you?……….

Of course not, so why do many marketers allow this practice of negative and misleading PPC ads and organic website advertising. Perhaps their scared of losing an affiliate or two, perhaps they cannot see anything wrong with this gutter marketing technique. In the short term this method will make a profit for both of you, but the methods these marketers use just to get a click to their squeeze page or your landing page will eventually be severely damaging to your reputation and future sales. Remember, they may be using your good name and reputation you have spent a lot of time building, just to increase their own opt in list, and in many cases the sale is just a bonus.

Recently a well know Internet Marketer, John Reese, released a product called Traffic secrets 2.0.

Within the first 2 days, he must have noticed a lot of PPC ads were appearing in the Google listings, and many of them had derogatory remarks and totally negative promotions (seams to be fashionable at this time). Now John being the man he is, obviously looked upon this type of promotion as being damaging, not only to the sales of Traffic secrets 2.0, but also to his reputation. And like many of us that promote or Brand ourselves with their real names as apposed to a fictitious or company name, they want to keep the Branding of their name and products squeaky clean. It’s important, so must be protected at all times.

To give you an example of this damaging type of advertising:………

 Traffic Secrets? LIES
Check it, I want a “refund” from him
I am about to diss John Reese

 Traffic Secrets Sucks?
Yes. I want a “Refund” from him
Don’t be another sucker, Man!

Traffic Secrets is a SCAM
Reese’s Traffic secrets is a big
Scam. We tell you the Truth.

Now I’m not going to say that this type of tactic does not work, it does, and I will be the first to admit that they make it very difficult for you to ignore and the temptation to click on this type of ad is irresistible, and they know it!

But lets face it, as an Internet Marketer you know why these ads provoke a reaction to click the link, just to get that computer cookied.

Let me ask you a question? – would you allow your name or product to be criticized in this way any where else……… No I didn’t think so, Imagine seeing this type of vulgar advertising on the side of a Bus or in a tube station (subway) or even sprayed onto a wall by some local youths with nothing better to do.

I also know of another very famous internet marketer, who was to appear on a national TV station, only to be told that his slot was cancelled. Why? – it was simply a matter of the reputation of this individual had been damaged by PPC ads

 Do you see my point?

Just as John did with his Affiliates, all that is required is a polite email notification to all your Affiliates that you do not and will not tolerate this type of advertising as it is against your TOS, and will terminate the account of any affiliate who uses this type of advertising within 24 hours………Now I realize this is a little difficult to do if the affiliate program is with Click bank or Pay Dotcom, and that’s why I always advocate the use of you own affiliate program when ever possible , as you keep tight control of what is going on within your business,

Do you lose affiliates, very unlikely if the product is a good product? And as you are all playing the field equally, it will be the best and more positive and creative ads that will get the clicks.

So why not clean up your act and become an Affiliate Terminator as well, you owe it to yourself and the continued success of your business, and always remember it is your business not the affiliates and you run it as you feel fit.

Don’t allow yourself to be led by others or any current trend; it may severely damage your reputation as an Internet Marketer.

John Reece

You’ve got to take your hat off to John Reece

He’s got some BA**S

John sent out an email to every affiliate of
Traffic Secrets 2.0

WARNING: Some TS Affiliates Are About To Be Terminated

John is a tuff guy when it comes to marketing, and when he feels you are crossing over the line he will let you know immediately. And some of his affiliates for his latest product release Traffic Secrets 2.0, are about to be terminated permanently.

So what is all the fuss about?……….

Here is a brief excerpt from the email sent out.

It’s completely against the TOS for our Affiliate Program to use *misleading* advertising of any kind.

Well, there are several of our affiliates currently using misleading advertising — especially with Google AdWords.

Anyone that’s using ‘controversial’ and/or misleading headlines or ads will be immediately terminated from the affiliate program if they don’t stop running these ads right away.

Stuff like, “John Reese Ripped Me Off”

or “Traffic Secrets Lies” etc. etc.

Then of course the ad simply redirects to someone’s affiliate link or a review page with their affiliate link.

Are you running misleading, negative ads like this? If you are, you have only a matter of hours to kill all of these ads or you will be terminated from the affiliate program.

We are working very hard to maintain the INTEGRITY of our business and we’re not about to condone this type of misleading marketing.

Some Marketers will say that ” Having an Edge” is what gets you the best results, and i’ll do what ever it takes to get that sale.

perhaps many think that as long as no one is being maliciously flamed and not using personal derogatory remarks, what does it matter, that’s what Internet Marketing is all about, isn’t it ?……..

Or do you think it’s about time all of this negativity in Adwords and the Organic Google listings should be something that a respectable Internet Marketer doesn’t need to rely on, are you prepared to use gutter tactics to get a sale ?, Do you care ?

Well, what do you think of this bold move by John Reese, are you with him? – or do you feel John is acting like BIG BROTHER, and you should have the right to use what ever you like in Adwords ads, especially as you are paying for the privilege of advertising Traffic Secrets.
